In York University’s Visual Arts programs, students at the Masters and Doctorate level are encouraged to develop their artistic practice independently within a critical and theoretical environment. The studio setting inspires artists to experiment and expand their knowledge of contemporary trends within their field whilst developing their own artistic voices.

This winter, the Varley Art Gallery of Markham partnered with the Visual Arts Department of York University to launch NEXT | WAVE, an annual exhibition presenting works by second-year MFA and PhD students.

The group exhibition is an exciting opportunity for students to exhibit in a professional setting, to broaden their exposure within the artistic community of York Region, and to engage with visitors of all ages. In a further collaboration, the exhibition texts have been researched and written by Art History graduate students at York University including – Irena Kovalenko, Lauren Kozicki, Olivia Mikalajunas, Megan O’Brien, Jennifer Polo, Elizabeth Porco, Katarina Veljovic, and Maria Won. This initiative strengthens the Varley Art Gallery’s position as a site for mentorship and as a forum for new ideas and experimentation.

The 10 artists featured in this first volume of NEXT | WAVE work from diverse backgrounds, media, styles, and theoretical frameworks. However, when presented together, shared interests and themes emerge from their works: an investigation of bodies and the borders placed on them; questions of interiority and exteriority; and a fascination with process and time in artistic creation.
