March Break at Markham Museum

Monday March 12 - Friday March 16, 2018

10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Location: 9350 Highway 48  map

Discover your inner engineer and learn all about simple and complex machines with us this March Break. See how simple machines come together to make the agricultural machinery that get our crops from the field to our plate. This STEAM based family drop-in program will catapult you into the technology behind farming, encouraging visitors to investigate the mechanics of many machines, including threshing machines and tractors, while even creating some of their own.

This three-part, indoor and outdoor, family drop-in program includes our Geared for Growing exhibition, a Design Lab and our new Machines in Action tour of a variety of our historic buildings and workshops.

Geared for Growing Exhibition

Visit the Geared for Growing exhibition, an exciting hands-on family friendly exploration of Markham’s rich agricultural history through the machines used in farming.  Learn about the many simple machines that make up some of the amazing complex machines that help us in our daily lives and on the farm.  From tractors to threshing machines, there are so many machines to discover.  Participate in our simple machines scavenger hunt and see how many marvellous machines you can find.

Design Lab

Put your new-found knowledge of machines to the test! In the Design Lab you will become an engineer to solve some real life challenges along with some silly scenarios.  From determining what wheels would work best through mud and grass to figuring out the best way to get your harvest to market, you will design and test your creations.

Machines in Action Tour*

With the help of our tour guide, families will explore a variety of the Museum’s historic buildings in a new way, through the eyes of our amazing machines. From the pulleys in the blacksmith shop to kitchen gadgets in Maxwell, all members of the family will enjoy this new hands-on tour experience.

Tours Daily at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
