The premiere staging of the song-cycle, “…of Enigmatic Things” will
be in Toronto this July at the George Ignatieff Theatre as part of
the 28th annual “FRINGE of Toronto Theatre Festival”. The show
offers 16 infectious songs that lead from the problem of
understanding to the path of living performed by six dynamic,
talented, young singers. Pain, loss, wisdom and, ultimately, hope
line this often travelled road. With memorable melodies and gritty
lyrics staged subtly and simply; “…of Enigmatic Things” leaves more
raw, emotional truth onstage in one hour than most plays can muster
in three.
“I’ve always thought of music as a sort of skeleton key for
emotion,” says composer Jeff Jones, “the idea with this show is to
unlock and explore the moments in life that cause one to ask the
very questions that guide one’s moral and emotional existence.”
“…of Enigmatic Things” is a collage of music, raw emotion, humour
and honesty that explores such inexplicably human experiences as
promiscuity, abandoning one’s dreams, learning to hope, suicide,
homophobia, forgiveness, infidelity, and just holding on.
“We offer no solutions, just questions,” Jones almost apologizes,
“the story is in the problem not the solution. Trying to find the
answer…trying to solve the enigma is the whole point anyway.”
“…of Enigmatic Things” is the culmination of ten years of
songwriting and fifteen years of a life in Theatre. A mostly
undiscovered talent, Jeff Jones has been creating and performing
music and theatre for almost half his life. From admittedly
uninspired beginnings, Jones has clawed his way back to his creative
passion from obscurity and compromise more than a few times. “…of
Enigmatic Things” is the undeniable fruit of that struggle.
Come and see the world of struggle, confusion, questions and hope
that we all share set to music!
Come and dream, come and cry, come and laugh.
Come and ask the questions that will lead you back to hope.
