To most people, an empty laundry hamper is just that. But to Basketeers, a laundry hamper represents Hope…hope for a woman leaving a shelter with few possessions, hope for women for a fresh start, a new life. The shelters that many of us were already supporting said it was fairly easy to find groups willing to buy or sponsor Christmas gifts for children, but their mothers seemed to have been forgotten. Basketeers supports the women by purchasing a laundry basket and filling it with items a woman would need when starting over and is given the basket upon leaving the shelter.
Each year, violence and abuse drives more than 100,000 Canadian women and children out of their homes and into shelters. Basketeers is a generous group of around 3,500 volunteers with large hearts. Our mission is to provide some of the simple necessities and niceties of life, bundled in a "New Beginnings Basket" and gifted to women as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.
More than more than 10,000 women have received a “New Beginnings” basket since 2000, and we continue to grow. In 2014, many individuals, families, friends, clubs, neighbourhoods and businesses created approximately 100 baskets for distribution to women ready to leave the York shelters that we represent. Last year, approximately 200 beautifully wrapped baskets were donated. It is the overwhelming generosity of people living and working in our Region that has given us the ability to reach out to help more women, and last year, a new shelter joined us. Attached is a photo of some of the baskets from last year's donations in Unionville...a truly amazing day!
York Basketeers’ Drop-off Day is Saturday, November 25, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Unionville Presbyterian Church, 600 Village Parkway, Markham. Everyone is invited to be part of this special day, bring your basket(s), stay for a while, enjoy some refreshments, visit with other Basketeers and meet representatives from our Region's four shelters. So mark your calendars and start spreading the word. For those who would like to give a basket, please register on the website: www.basketeers.org through the Give a Basket page. We are not a registered charity, every donated basket is a gift of encouragement and support for a woman as she transitions back into the community. 100% of your gift is passed on to a woman identified by one of our shelters. Fill a basket, fill your heart and send a powerful message of support to these courageous women.
