(Feb.16.07) The
Markham Waxers got two goals from Claudio Cowdrey, and shutout goaltending
from Matt Hansell, to defeat the Durham Fury Thursday evening 2-0, wrapping
up a four game sweep of their first playoff round.
Markham’s special teams excelled last night, the power
play scoring on one of three opportunities, and the penalty killers
combining to keep Durham off the board through the Fury’s eight power play
opportunities.
Add flawless goaltending from Matt Hansell, who stopped
all 24 shots he faced, and the Waxers had the recipe for victory.
All the scoring was recorded in the first period.
Claudio Cowdrey netted an even strength goal at 8:02, with assists going to
Cody Hamilton and Corey Tamblyn, and then a power play marker at 18:55 from
Ryan Carey and Tamblyn.
The Waxers now await
the results of the other first round series in their division to see who
their next round adversaries will be. St. Mikes Buzzers have already swept
Ajax but the Toronto-Pickering and Vaughan-North York matchups are still
undecided. As of Thursday night, Toronto Junior A Canadiens lead Pickering
Panthers three games to two, and Vaughan Vipers have a 2-1 edge over the
North York Rangers. |
