(Feb.14.07) In a game that
was genteel compared to the penalty marred tilt with Durham on
Sunday, the Markham Waxers defeated the Fury 5-1 on Tuesday night to
take a 3-0 lead in their playoff series.
Markham got
scoring from five different players and never trailed in the
game.
Ryan Carey got the
Waxers on the board at 18:32 of the first period. Giancarlo Iuorio—coming
off a two-goal night on Sunday—and Mark Cornacchia drew the assists.
Markham
extended their lead in the second period on two quick power play goals,
David Kostuch scoring at 8:04 from Daniel Torres and Paul McMullen, followed
by Cody Hamilton at 9:05, assists going to Giancarlo Iuorio and Ryan Carey.
Durham got back into the game thanks to their own power play. Trevor
McKinney scored at 10:14, from Rob Kay and Michael Markovic.
But that
was as close as the Waxers let Durham get, and the only blemish on otherwise
perfect penalty killing that was put to the test fourteen times.
In fact, a
string of consecutive Waxer penalties in the second period drew a protest from captain Daniel Torres that earned him a game misconduct from
referee Steve Black.
In the
third period, Mike Scheu scored unassisted at 6:40 to take the wind out of
the Fury and Claudio Cowdrey sealed the deal with a goal at 16:39 from Mike
Scheu and Dan Shanks.
Markham got
another solid performance from goalie Matt Hansell who topped 28 of 29
shots.
The Waxers
can close things out on Thursday night when the series comes back to Markham
for Game Four at Centennial Arena, 8600 McCowan Rd.
