Simple Symphony

June 9, 2017

8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Location: Cornell Recital Hall
3201 Bur Oak Ave. map

A centerpiece to Markham’s 2017 Contemporary Music Festival, the Kindred Spirits Orchestra presents a stimulating concert of twentieth century music. Two early works from British composer Benjamin Britten are showcased in this captivating program: Sinfonietta and Simple Symphony. The former, his first published work, reflects the young composer’s influence of Schoenberg and the Second Viennese School, while the later is entirely based on melodies the wunderkind composer wrote when he was age nine to twelve. The KSO’s own principal clarinetist Carmen Gassi tackles the wildly bi-polar Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra by Danish composer Carl Nielsen; a piece of music said to depict the soloist for whom it was written.

Michael Berec | conductor
Carmen Gassi | clarinettist

Pieces performed are:
Nielsen, Concerto for clarinet and orchestra
Britten, Simple Symphony
Britten, Sinfonietta, Op. 1
