Markham Waxers Playoffs 2008

The Markham Waxers are a member of the
Ontario Provincial Junior "A" Hockey League (OPJHL).

Markham Waxers’ magical playoff run ends in 6-3 loss

to new OPJHL champions Oakville Blades

Rick Cornacchia

(April 13, 2008) The Markham Waxers bowed 6-3 this evening to the Oakville Blades who emerged victors, four games to one, in the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League’s championship final. Congratulations to the Oakville Blades.

And congratulations to the Markham Waxers hockey club who did their team and their city proud!

The trip to the OPJHL final is a long and arduous one. The Waxers, under coach Rick Cornacchia, eliminated, in successive playoff rounds, the Dixie Beehives, Vaughan Vipers and St. Michael’s Buzzers to become South Division Champions. They then took on and defeated the Wellington Dukes to become South/East Conference champions and to earn a berth in the league final against the North/West conference champs the Oakville Blades.

Tonight’s game got off to a rough start for Markham. Oakville’s Luke Moodie scored only thirty-four seconds into the game. Nick McParland and Julian Cimadamore drew assists. Oakville delivered another dagger at 8:24 when Geoff Guimond scored a short-handed goal from Jeremy Welsh. Welsh then added an even-strength tally for Oakville at 12:26, with assists from Geoff Guimond and Chris Corbeil.

With his team down 3-0 at the break, coach Rick Cornacchia decided to send out Breton MacKinnon in net for the second period, replacing Kyle Rank.

Waxer defenseman Cody Hamilton got Markham back into the game at 6:55 of the middle frame, scoring on the power play from Corey Tamblyn. But Nick McParland countered for Oakville at 14:45 from Luke Moodie and Julian Cimadamore to restore the three-goal Blades lead.

Markham battled. David Kostuch got his team an early goal in the third period, scoring on the power play at 2:21 from Mark Cornacchia and Michael Scheu. Again Oakville replied soon after. At 8:18 Nick McParland got his second of the game, this time on the power play, with assists from Steven Guzzo and Luke Moodie.

The Waxers’ Sean Roberge made it 5-3 at 11:47, with helpers from Kevin Hudes and Michael Catenacci, but only twelve seconds later Steven Guzzo put Oakville back up 6-3, with assists from Luke Moodie and Nick McParland.

Oakville protected their lead the rest of the way and, to the delight of their home fans, secured the win and the league championship.

Markham Waxers lose at home to Oakville Blades 4-1,

now trail in championship series three games to one

 Michael Scheu

(April 11, 2008) Tonight the Markham Waxers dropped Game 4 of the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League championship against the Oakville Blades by a score of 4-1 and now have their backs to the wall in the best of seven series, trailing three games to one.

Although the Waxers outshot the Blades 45-32, they could only get one puck past Oakville goalie Scott Greenham. Markham’s lone goal came from Michael Scheu.

Once again, it was the second period that did the Waxers in.

The first period ended with the score tied 1-1. Oakville had jumped into the lead at 9:44 on a goal by Julian Cimadamore from Luke Moodie and Geoff Guimond. Michael Scheu tied things up at 14:49, with assists from David Kostuch and Matthew Meszaros.

Despite being outshot in the second period 23-18, Oakville restored the lead and never looked back. Kellan Lain scored at 9:17, with an assist from Dustin Alcock. At 16:32 Geoff Guimond scored on the power play from Chris Haltigin and Nick McParland.

Oakville capitalized on another power play opportunity at 10:45 of the third period. Kellan Lain scored his second goal of the night, assists going to Jeremy Welsh and Chris Corbeil, to give Oakville a three-goal cushion.

The Waxers now have to win the next three games. Game 5 will be played in Oakville on Sunday, April 13, starting at 6 p.m. If the Waxers can steal a win on the road and stay alive, they will have a chance to even the series at Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena on Wednesday, April 16.

Waxers rally but fall short in 6-4 loss

to Oakville Blades who take 2-1 lead in series

Matthew Meszaros

(April 9, 2008) The Markham Waxers rallied from a 4-0 second period deficit but came up short tonight in Oakville against the Blades, falling 6-4 in Game 3 of the best of seven Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League championship series.

Just as in Game 1 played in Oakville last Saturday, the second period was Markham’s Achilles heel. The Waxers, however, made a game of it, and pulled to within a goal midway through the third period, trailing 5-4 before Oakville netted the insurance goal. The Waxers outshot Oakville 44-37.

Oakville opened the scoring at 11:01 of the first period. With the Waxers’ Matthew Meszaros in the penalty box, Nick McParland scored on the power play from Julian Cimadamore and Steven Guzzo.

In the second period, Oakville scored three consecutive goals, starting with Kellan Lain at 2:23, Kyle Badham drawing an assist. The Blades added insult to injury when Jeremy Welsh scored a short-handed goal at 3:20 from Luke Moodie and Scott Greenham.

After the Welsh goal, Markham coach Rick Cornacchia pulled starting goalie Kyle Rank in favour of Breton MacKinnon but Oakville’s Steven Guzzo made it 4-0 at 6:05, helped by Blake Barbieri.

Matthew Meszaros finally got the Waxers on the board at 11:50, with an assist from Fiore Lucente.

Kevin Hudes

Rick Cornacchia

Meszaros’ goal set the stage for Markham’s rally in the third period. The Waxers got to work early. Corey Tamblyn scored at 2:59 from Murray Free and at 5:38 Kevin Hudes scored on the power play from Sean Roberge and Murray Free. Markham now trailed 4-3.

Oakville responded at 7:48, Dustin Alcock scoring from Jeremy Walsh and Dan Hunt but Mark Cornacchia again drew the Waxers within a goal at 13:02 when he scored on the power play from David Kostuch.

Markham pulled their goalie for an extra forward but at 18:58 Oakville put the puck in the empty net for an insurance goal.

Game 4 will be played at Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena on Friday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Waxers top Oakville Blades 4-2 to tie

OPJHL championship series at one game each

Mark Cornacchia

(April 7, 2008) The Markham Waxers won a 4-2 thriller tonight at Markham Centennial Arena over the Oakville Blades and evened their best of seven Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League championship series at one game each.

Markham’s big guns came through tonight. Corey Tamblyn, Michael Scheu, Mark Cornacchia (with the winning goal) and David Kostuch all scored for the Waxers. Goalie Kyle Rank, after getting pulled in the series opener last Saturday, came back with a strong performance, stopping 32 of 34 shots.
Most of the drama was saved for the third period in this match.

There was no scoring in the first period and the goose eggs continued until 16:20 of the second when Markham’s Corey Tamblyn got his team on the board, with assists from Murray Free and Kevin Hudes.

Markham was able to nurse the 1-0 lead until 8:01 of the third period when Oakville’s Nick McParland scored on the power play from Taylor Farris. The Waxers’ Michael Scheu, however, restored the lead at 10:18 on a goal assisted by David Kostuch and Stephen DiMonte.

David Kostuch

Michael Scheu

The Waxers couldn’t hold that lead either. At 15:40 Oakville’s Chris Corbeil tied things up again, with a helper from Luke Moodie. But just thirty-nine seconds later Mark Cornacchia, set up by Michael Scheu, put Markham back up 3-2.

White knuckle time began in earnest when the Oakville Blades pulled their goalie in the final minute in favour of a sixth attacker. The strategy backfired and Markham fans breathed a sigh of relief when David Kostuch scored unassisted into the empty net.

The series returns to Joshua Creek Arena in Oakville for Game 3 on Wednesday, April 9. Game 4 will be back at Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena on Friday, April 11, with game time at 7:30 p.m.

Markham Waxers fall 6-3 to Oakville Blades

 in spirited OPJHL championship start

David Kostuch

(April 5, 2008) The Markham Waxers traveled to Oakville tonight and, in a high-spirited encounter with the Blades, came up on the short end of a 6-3 score in Game One of their best of seven Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League championship series.

Oakville rode to victory on the strength of a dominating four-goal second period.

Markham had built up a quick 2-0 lead in the first period. David Kostuch scored at 5:59 on the power play from Mark Cornacchia and Sean Roberge and at 8:07 Corey Tamblyn was the Waxers marksman, Fiore Lucente and Sean Roberge earning assists on the play.

Oakville surprised Markham with a short-handed goal at 9:07 by Luke Moodie, assisted by Jeremy Walsh. Moodie struck again at 18:41, tying the score 2-2, with assists from Julian Cimadamore and Nick McParland.

Oakville broke it open in the second period. At 2:50 Julian Cimadamore scored on the power play from Dan Hunt and Nick McParland. Steven Guzzo potted an even-strength goal at 8:52 from Chris Corbeil and Jeff Grenier, followed by Matt Ribeiro at 10:25 from Taylor Farris and Braden Birch. At this point Waxers' coach Rick Cornacchia pulled starting goalie Kyle Rank and sent in backup Breton MacKinnon.

Oakville closed out their scoring outburst with another power play goal, this time by Kellan Lain from Nick McParland and Julian Cimadamore at 13:22. Oakville outshot the Waxers in the period 18-6.

Markham’s frustrations spilled over late in the period, resulting in a game misconduct for Kevin Hudes and a ten-minute misconduct for Murray Free.

The third period featured more of the bruising physical play that promises to be one of the hallmarks of the series.

Markham’s Michael Scheu got the lone goal of the period, a power play goal at 14:15 from David Kostuch and Cody Hamilton to pull the Waxers to within three goals. But it was too little too late.

The Waxers will have a couple of days to regroup and will host the Blades for Game 2 at Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena on Monday, April 7, game time 7:30 p.m.

Waxers win berth in OPJHL championship series

with 4-1 victory over Wellington Dukes

Claudio Cowdrey

(March 29, 2008) The Markham Waxers jumped another hurdle in their exciting 2008 playoff run, defeating the Wellington Dukes 4-1 tonight before over 700 delighted fans at Markham Centennial Comunity Centre Arena. With the win the Waxers complete a four-games-to-one victory in the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League semi-final and are the league’s South/East conference champions.

Markham now moves on to the league championship final, a best of seven series against the winner of the North/West conference playdown between the Oakville Blades and the Aurora Tigers. Oakville currently leads that series 3-2.

After Wellington took the first game of the series in Markham the Waxers won the next four in a row.

Tonight, captain David Kostuch led his team in scoring, with two goals and an assist. Mark Cornacchia had three assists and Cody Hamilton a goal and an assist.

Markham took a 1-0 lead at 8:26 of the first period when Claudio Cowdrey scored on a power play from Stephen DiMonte and Mark Cornacchia. The Waxers outshot Wellington in the opening period 17-13.

In the second period Markham built up a three-goal lead. Big defenseman Cody Hamilton scored at 4:45 with assists from David Kostuch and Corey Tamblyn and at 10:00 David Kostuch, set up on the power play by Cody Hamilton and Mark Cornacchia, got another puck behind Wellington goalie Paul Karpowich.

Wellington, their backs to the wall, battled and got back into the game at 17:40 when Chris Ayotte scored, assisted by Jon Bockmann and Jeremy Franklin
.

Kyle Rank

In the third period, Wellington outshot the Waxers 18-15, trying desperately to tie the game, but the Waxers did a great job of defending the lead. When the Dukes pulled their goalie for an extra attacker in the final minute, captain David Kostuch scored into the empty net to put the game out of reach for Wellington.

At the final buzzer, the Waxers mobbed their goalie and congratulated each other on the victory. In the traditional gesture of good sportsmanship, the two teams then exchanged handshakes.

It was a busy night for both goalies. Markham netminder Kyle Rank played another strong game, turning aside 41 shots, while the Waxers directed 48 shots on the Dukes' Paul Karpowich.

Markham Waxers win on the road in Wellington 4-2,

now lead semi-final 3 games to 1

Kevin Hudes

(Mar. 28, 2008) The Markham Waxers, riding a strong third period, defeated the Wellington Dukes tonight at Wellington Community Centre Arena by a score of 4-2 and have now taken a three-games-to-one lead in this Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League semi-final.

Kevin Hudes led the scoring for Markham with a hat trick. Murray Free had three assists and goalie Kyle Rank turned aside 32 of 34 shots.

Markham was first to get on the board. Kevin Hudes scored on the power play at 4:42 from Murray Free and Cody Hamilton. But Wellington answered at 9:44 when Marc Senecal scored unassisted on a Dukes power play. Although Markham outshot Wellington 17-10 in the first twenty minutes, the period ended with the score tied 1-1.

The Dukes jumped ahead early in the second period. Zach Morbeck scored at 2:06 with assists from Jeremy Franklin and Justin Johnson. Wellington pressed hard, outshooting the Waxers in the period 16-12 and Markham owed it largely to goalie Kyle Rank that they were only down 2-1 at the period’s end.

The Waxers came on in the third period. Kevin Hudes got his second goal of the night at 3:57 from Murray Free and Chris Tanev and the score was even 2-2. Sharpshooter Claudio Cowdrey put Markham in the lead at 5:26, with assists from Fiore Lucente and Matthew Meszaros.

The Waxers protected the lead and then iced it at 19:47 when Kevin Hudes completed the hat trick with an empty net goal. Murray Free and Paul McMullen drew the assists. The Waxers outshot Wellington on the night, 40-34.

With a 3-1 lead in games, the Waxers have a chance to win the series in Game 5 which will be played on Saturday, March 29 at Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena, 8600 McCowan Road. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

over Wellington and 2-1 lead in OPJHL semi-final.

David Kostuch

(March 25, 2008) Markham Waxers captain David Kostuch scored four goals to pace his team to a 7-4 victory tonight against the visiting Wellington Dukes. Markham now holds a 2-1 lead in games in the best of seven Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League semi-final series.

Markham’s big guns stepped up tonight. Kostuch added two assists to his four goals. Mark Cornacchia had a goal and four assists and Michael Scheu chipped in with three assists. Goalie Kyle Rank continued his stellar work in the net, turning aside 34 shots directed his way by the Dukes who outshot Markham 38-36.

Markham jumped out to an early lead. Mark Cornacchia scored at 3:14 from Michael Scheu and David Kostuch. The same line clicked again at 6:44 when David Kostuch took his turn as the marksman, set up by Mark Cornacchia and Michael Scheu.

But Wellington got themselves back into the game late in the period when Zach Morbeck scored an unassisted goal at 15:59 and at the break the Waxers were up 2-1.

Markham struck early in the second period. Taylor Murphy put one in at 3:23, with assists from Mark Cornacchia and Bryan Black. At 4:22 David Kostuch scored his second of the game from his line mates Michael Scheu and Mark Cornacchia.

Wellington responded soon after. At 6:52 Chris Smith scored on the power play from Justin Johnson and John Bockmann. But the rally was short-lived. At 9:12 Markham’s Corey Tamblyn, with an assist from David Kostuch, put Markham up 5-2 and at 18:13 David Kostuch completed his hat trick with an unassisted goal. Markham outshot Wellington in the period 21-8.

In the third period Wellington tried again to get a rally going. Kyle Hawkins-Schulz scored at 3:01 from Chris Smith and Brandon Bureau but Waxers captain David Kostuch made it a four-goal night, combining with Mark Cornacchia at 6:31 and Markham was now up 7-3.

Wellington continued to press hard and outshot the Waxers 18-6 in the third period. A goal by the Dukes’ Marc Senecal at 11:16, assisted by Max Bobrow and Jared Anderson, brought the visitors within three goals but they couldn’t get any more pucks by Waxers goalie Kyle Rank.

Game 4 in the series will be played in Wellington on Friday, March 28. Game 5 returns to Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena (8600 McCowan Road) on Saturday, March 29 at 7:30 p.m.

Markham Waxers defeat Wellington Dukes 5-2

to even semi-final series

Murray Free

(March 23, 2008) The Markham Waxers made the trip to Wellington enjoyable for themselves and their fans today by registering a convincing 5-2 victory over the Dukes and evening their Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League semi-final at one game apiece.

Murray Free led the offence with two goals and Corey Tamblyn continued his strong playoff run with a goal and two assists. Waxers goalie Kyle Rank played another strong game, stopping 35 of 37 shots.

The Dukes took advantage of the four-on-three power play, Tony Rizzi scoring, with an assist from Chris Brown.

Markham responded in the second period. At 5:08, Murray Free evened the score on a goal from Corey Tamblyn and Kevin Hudes and at 15:26 Corey Tamblyn did the scoring himself, Kevin Hudes once again earning an assist, as did Chris Tanev. The second period ended with the Waxers ahead 2-1.

Markham came out strong in the third period and built on their lead. Murray Free scored at 4:51, assisted by Corey Tamblyn. Michael Scheu put Markham up 4-1, scoring on the power play at 6:06 from Mark Cornacchia and Cody Hamilton.

Wellington’s Marty O’Grady kept it close when he scored on the power play at 8:07 from Mark Senecal and Corey Bureau. Waxers fans started to squirm a bit when Markham was called for too many men on the ice at 15:52 but captain David Kostuch put a halt to any thoughts of a Wellington comeback by scoring a short-handed goal at 16:21, set up by fellow penalty killer Michael Scheu.

This is a series between two excellent, and evenly-matched, teams and promises to provide lots more exciting hockey. Game 3 will be played on Tuesday, March 25 at Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena, game time 7:30 p.m. Game 4 will be back in Wellington on Friday, March 28 and then returns to Markham on Saturday, March 29, game time once again 7:30 p.m.

Despite the loss by the Waxers, it was an exciting kick off to what should be a very competitive series. A season high 1,466 fans turned out. This included enthusiastic Waxers fans and also many Dukes supporters who had traveled from the Wellington area to support their team.

Markham Waxers defeat St. Mikes 2-1, win series

and move on to OPJHL semi-final

Chris Tanev
Chris Tanev

(March 17, 2008) The Markham Waxers have won the OPJHL South Division final against the St. Mikes Buzzers, four games to two. The Waxers sealed the series win tonight, holding on for an exciting 2-1 victory in Game Six at Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena.

With the victory, the Waxers move on to the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League’s semi-final. This series will see them pitted against the Wellington Dukes who won the OPJHL Eastern Division.

The victory will help to erase the sting of last year’s heartbreaking game seven overtime loss to these same St. Mikes Buzzers in the 2007 South Division final.

Tonight’s game was a tight, close checking affair right from the start. There was no scoring in the first period. In the second period, Cody Hamilton put Markham into a 1-0 lead at 16:27 on a goal assisted by Murray Free and Corey Tamblyn.

St. Mikes shocked Markham’s home crowd by tying the score only 41 seconds into the third period, a goal scored unassisted by Richard Ryan.

At 6:57, however, the Waxers’ Chris Tanev put Markham back up 2-1, with assists from David Kostuch and Matthew Meszaros.

St. Mikes pressed for the equalizer, knowing there was no tomorrow. They had their chances but Markham’s penalty killing came up big, killing off three consecutive minor penalties, including a brief two-man disadvantage.

Cody Hamilton

Rick Cornacchia

Congratulations to the players, the coaching staff led by Rick Cornacchia and the management of the Markham Waxers on their South Division championship. Markham is proud of you. Good luck in the League semi-finals!

Game One of the OPJHL semi-final between the Markham Waxers and Wellington Dukes will be played at Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena on Friday, March 21 starting at 7:30 p.m.

Waxers prevail in 3-2 cliffhanger against St. Mikes,

need one more victory for series win

David Kostuch

(March 16, 2008) The Markham Waxers skated into St. Mikes Arena this afternoon and outlasted the Buzzers for a 3-2 win that earned them a three-games-to-two lead in the best of seven OPJHL South Division final.

Markham’s captain David Kostuch scored in his second straight game after being held off the score sheet in the first three matches. And, once again, Waxers goalie Kyle Rank played solidly in net, stopping of 46 of 48 shots.

St. Mikes took the lead in the first period when Louke Oakley scored at 9:36 from Bryan Potacco and Brandan Burlon. Considering they had been outshot by St. Mikes 21-10, the Waxers were happy to get through the period down by only a goal.

In the second period, Markham’s power play came through. St. Mikes’ Thomas Bark was called for hooking and 7:05 and team mate Adam Miceli followed him to the penalty box only eighteen seconds later for the same infraction, thus assuring the Waxers of a lengthy two-man advantage. Markham didn’t take long to capitalize, Cody Hamilton scoring at 7:39 from David Kostuch. That released Thomas Bark from the penalty box but Markham still retained a man-advantage and this time David Kostuch was the marksman, scoring at 8:51 from Giancarlo Iuorio and Mark Cornacchia. Markham now led 2-1.

Later in the middle period, at 15:44, St. Mikes took advantage of a power play of their own to even the score when Erik Axell scored, assisted by Louke Oakley and Brandon Burlon.

Cody Hamilton

Murray Free

The stage was set for a dramatic third period. Markham’s Murray Free scored what would prove to be the winner at 2:59, assisted by Michael Scheu and Corey Tamblyn. After that the Waxers would do a good job of defending the lead and stifling St. Mikes. Markham actually outshot the Buzzers in the third period 11-9.

The series returns to Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena for Game 6 on Monday, March 17, with game time 7:30 p.m. The Waxers have a chance to seal the series win at home. If necessary, Game 7 will be played on Tuesday, March 18 at St. Mikes Arena.

Waxers overpower St. Mikes 5-2,

series now knotted at two games apiece

Kyle Rank

(March 14, 2008) The Markham Waxers, down two games to one to the St. Mikes Buzzers, came up with a huge effort tonight in pivotal game four. After falling behind 2-0 in the first period at Markham Centennial Arena, the Waxers rallied with five unanswered goals to come away with a 5-2 victory and tie their best of seven OPJHL South Division final at two games each.

St. Mikes peppered goalie Kyle Rank with 50 shots but the Waxers netminder came up big for his team, allowing only two to get by him.

The first period got off to a rocky start for the Waxers when they gave up a short-handed goal at 5:59 to St. Mikes penalty killer Brandon Burton. Cassidy Preston and Louke Oakley drew assists on the play. Things got worse when St. Mikes added to their lead at 16:27. Louke Oakley continued a strong period with a goal, this time Cassisdy Preston drawing the assist. The Waxers, however, got themselves back into the game before the end of the period, Murray Free scoring on the power play from Sean Roberge and Corey Tamblyn at 18:55. The period ended with the Buzzers up 2-1

In the second period, Markham’s power play came through again. Captain David Kostuch drew the Waxers even, scoring his first goal of the series, assisted by Cody Hamilton, at 5:47. Markham pulled ahead 3-2 at 16:26 when Giancarlo Iuorio capitalized on another man-advantage, with helpers from Kevin Hudes and Cody Hamilton.

At 5:13 of the third period, Corey Tamblyn gave the Waxers some breathing room, potting an insurance goal from Michael Scheu and Murray Free. Then, with Markham’s Claudio Cowdrey off for tripping, Waxers’ fleet-footed penalty killer Mark Cornacchia scored short-handed at 14:12 from Matthew Meszaros to put the game out of reach.

Game Five will be played on Sunday, March 16 at St. Mikes Arena at 2:00 p.m. The series returns on Monday, March 17 for Game Six at Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena, with game time 7:30 p.m. Game Seven, if necessary, will be back at St. Mikes Arena on Tuesday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m.

Waxers tripped again by St. Mikes 4-1,

now trail in series

Corey Tamblyn

(March 11, 2008) For the second time in two days, the Markham Waxers went down to a 4-1 defeat tonight at the hands of the St. Mikes Buzzers in a match played at St. Mikes Arena. The Buzzers now take a 2-1 lead in games in the best of seven OPJHL South Division final.

St. Mikes jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead and never looked back. They got goals from Bryan Potacco, Eric Rubino and Richard Ryan.

In the second period, Markham rallied, outshouting St. Mikes 11-10. Corey Tamblyn got the Waxers back in the game with a goal at 9:17, assisted by Fiore Lucente but that’s as big a dent as they could make on the Buzzers’ lead before heading to the dressing rooms.

In the third period, St. Mikes defended their lead and then extended it with a goal by Cassidy Preston at 13:22.

Part of St. Mikes success has been in keeping Markham’s big guns in check. Waxers captain David Kostuch and sharpshooter Michael Scheu have yet to score in the series.

The Waxers will be trying to even the series when the two teams meet again on Friday, March 14 at Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena (8600 McCowan Rd) at 7:30 p.m.

Waxers fall to St. Mikes 4-1,

series tied at one game each

Corey Tamblyn

(March 10, 2008) Markham poured 41 shots on St. Mikes goalie Sean Perkins but only Corey Tamblyn could get one by him and the Waxers had to yield tonight 3-1 to the Buzzers at Markham Centennial Arena. The St. Mikes victory evens the best of seven divisional final at one game apiece.

The loss breaks off an eight-game playoff winning streak for Markham who had swept both the Dixie Beehives and the Vaughan Vipers in their first and second playoff rounds.

There was no scoring in the first period. Markham had the advantage in shots 15-11 but couldn’t solve Sean Perkins.
St. Mikes took the lead in the second period when Richard Ryan scored at 18:35 assisted by Fred Cassiani and Eric Rubino.

The Buzzers extended their lead at 1:14 of the third period when Fred Cassiani scored, assists going to Adam Miceli and Eric Rubino. The Waxers soon replied, Corey Tamblyn finally beating Perkins at 4:28 but St. Mikes restored the two-goal lead at 7:09 when Cassidy Preston scored on the power play, assisted by Louke Oakley and Justin Troiani. Markham had two power play opportunities after that but couldn’t take advantage and at 19:53 the Buzzers iced it with an empty-net goal by Fred Cassiani.

The teams get right back at it March 11 at St. Mikes Arena, game time 8:00 p.m. The series returns to Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena on Friday, March 14. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

Waxers hold off late charge by St. Mikes,

  take 1-0 series lead

Taylor Murphy

(Mar. 7, 2008) The Markham Waxers opened their OPJHL Divisional Final at St. Mikes Arena tonight and came away with a hard fought 4-3 victory over the Buzzers. Markham took a three-goal lead into the third period and were able to hold off a desperate late charge by St. Mikes.

Outshot by the Buzzers 35 to 33, the Waxers needed a strong second period, good penalty killing, and solid goaltending from Kyle Rank to pull out the victory.

The two teams traded goals in the first period. Markham was first to get on the board, Taylor Murphy scoring at 11:35 from Bryan Black and Matthew Meszaros. St. Michael’s Thomas Bark responded with a power play goal at 15:42, with an assist from Nick D’Agostino. The period ended with the score tied 1-1.

In the second period, Giancarlo Iuorio got the Waxers back in the lead with a goal at 5:24 assisted by Murray Free and at 14:14 the same two teamed up again, Murray Free scoring with an assist from Giancarlo Iuorio, and Markham increased their margin to 3-1. The Waxers weren’t through. Claudio Cowdrey potted an unassisted goal at 16:13 and the St. Mikes coach pulled starting goalie Corey Gershon in favour of Sean Perkins. Markham took a three-goal lead into the dressing room, grateful to their penalty killing who came up big in this period, killing off four consecutive minor penalties.

Markham had to go back to penalty killing mode in the third period, with two early short-handed situations, but kept the Buzzers at bay. At full strength the Waxers defended their lead and were successful in holding off the Buzzers until the 14:48 mark.

That’s when white knuckle time began. Brian Potacco scored unassisted for St. Mikes to make the score 4-2. With less than a minute remaining the Buzzers pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and Justin Troiani scored at 19:31 to pull St. Mikes within a goal. The Waxers, however, were able to kill of the last seconds and preserve the win.

Game 2 of the best of seven series will be played at Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena (8600 McCowan Road) on Monday, March 10, starting at 7:30 p.m. Game 3 returns to St. Mikes Arena on Tuesday, March 11 at 8 p.m. and Game 4 is back in Markham on Friday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m.

 Kostuch hat trick paces Waxers

 to 3-1 win, series sweep

David Kostuch

(Feb. 29, 2008) The Markham Waxers scored three goals tonight, all by captain David Kostuch, enough to defeat the Vaughan Vipers 3-1 at Markham Centennial Arena and seal a four game sweep of their second round OPJHL playoff series.

Tonight's game was a nailbiter from the start. There was no scoring in the first period, with both teams failing to score on their power play opportunities.

In the second period, David Kostuch put Markham in the lead with a goal at 13:01 assisted by Michael Scheu and Mark Cornacchia.
Kostuch gave Markham what appeared to be a comfortable 2-0 margin with a goal in the third period at the 16:11 mark, assisted by Mark Cornacchia. Vaughan's Jamie MacQueen, however, scored only 22 seconds later to keep his team in the game. The Waxers were able to hold off the Vipers the rest of the way and Kostuch completed his hat trick with an unassisted insurance goal at 19:25.

Markham goalie Kyle Rank continued his steady playoff performances, turning aside 32 of 33 shots he faced.

The Waxers now move on to the divisional final against their old rivals the St. Michael's Buzzers. The series kicks off on Friday, March 7 at St. Michael's Arena. Game 2 is on Monday, March 10 at Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena at 7:30 p.m.

Markham Waxers outlast Vaughan Vipers 6-3,

are now poised for series sweep

Corey Tamblyn

(Feb. 27, 2008)   The Markham Waxers continued their mastery of the Vaughan Vipers, doubling up the Vipers 6-3 tonight at the Al Palladini Community Centre in Vaughan, and taking a three-games-to-none stranglehold on their best of seven second round playoff series.

Markham’s smooth skating Corey Tamblyn was tonight’s hero, scoring a hat trick and assisting on another goal.  Kevin Hudes had four assists for the Waxers.

The game started out quietly on the scoring front.  Tamblyn put the Waxers ahead at 4:13 of the first period, Kevin Hudes drawing an assist on the play, and the period ended with the Waxers holding a 1-0 lead.

The second period was a roller coaster ride.  Corey Tamblyn extended the Waxers lead to 2-0 with a goal at 7:13 assisted by Murray Free and Kevin Hudes.  But less than two minutes later the Vipers shocked the Waxers, with Paul Rodrigues and Mark Schiraldi scoring within nine seconds of each other.  Just like that, the game was tied.

Things got even wilder in the third period, and all of it in the last seven minutes!  Markham’s Claudio Cowdrey gave the Waxers a 3-2 lead at 13:24 with a goal assisted by Cody Hamilton.   Brad Fleishman of the Vipers put his team in a hole, taking a two-minute checking from behind penalty, but team mate Brendan Sanders seemed to have bailed him out with an unassisted short-handed goal that tied the score 3-3.  Corey Tamblyn then scored his third goal of the night on the continuing power play at 14:45, with assists from Kevin Hudes and Murray Free, to put Markham back up 4-3.  With the Vipers’ Paul Rodrigues in the penalty box for crosschecking, the Waxers’ Sean Roberge capitalized, netting an insurance goal at 16:55 from Corey Tamblyn and Kevin Hudes.  Another minor penalty assessed to the Vipers for hooking at 17:12 removed any chance of a comback and Giancarlo Iuorio, with an assist from Cody Hamilton, put the final nail in Vaughan’s coffin with a goal at 19:16, making the final score 6-3 and capping a wild night at the Al Palladini Community Centre.

Kyle Rank once again started in goal for Markham and held off the Vipers, stopping 34 of 37 shots.

The Waxers have a chance to complete the sweep in front of their home crowd when the series returns to the Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena for Game 4 on Friday, February 29 at 7:30 p.m.

 Waxers defeat Vaughan 5-2,

  take two-game lead in series

Kevin Hudes

(Feb. 25, 2008)   The Markham Waxers took on the Vaughan Vipers at Markham Centennial Arena this evening in Game 2 of their second round playoff series and came away with a hard earned 5-2 victory and a two-game lead.

Waxer captain David Kostuch had another big game with two goals. Markham’s Kevin Hudes also scored a pair. Kyle Rank turned in another steady performance, turning away 32 of 34 shots.

Markham set the tone early, David Kostuch scoring at 5:05 of the first period, with assists from Paul McMullen and Fiore Lucente. Vaughan got the equalizer at 9:39, a power play goal by Paul Rodrigues but the Waxers responded less than two minutes later with a power play goal of their own scored by Kevin Hudes. Cody Hamilton and Corey Tamblyn drew assists. At 12:22, Mark Cornacchia, sent out to help kill off a Markham penalty, netted an unassisted short-handed goal that put Markham up 3-1.

Vaughan narrowed the gap in the second period when Jamie MacQueen scored an unassisted goal at 10:48.

That is as close as the Vipers could get. In the third period Kevin Hudes got an insurance goal at 13:29, with an assist from Murray Free, and David Kostuch put the game out of reach at 17:35 with a power play goal assisted by Mark Cornacchia and Paul McMullen.

 Waxers de-fang Vipers 8-2,

  take series lead

David Kostuch

(Feb. 23, 2008)  The Markham Waxers skated into the Vipers’ nest at Al Palladini Community Centre in Vaughan tonight and it was the hometowners who got snake bit, falling to the Waxers 8-2. Markham takes a 1-0 lead in games in their best-of-seven series.

David Kostuch had a huge night for Markham, scoring three goals and assisting on another. Michael Scheu contributed two goals and added three assists.

The Waxers jumped out to an early lead, at only 1:26 of the first period, when Michael Scheu scored a short-handed goal with the assist of fellow penalty killing forward David Kostuch. At 9:36 the same two teamed up again at even strength, this time Kostuch potting the goal, the assist going to Scheu. The Waxers then took advantage of a five-minute major for crosschecking assessed to Vaughan’s Brad Fleishman, Giancarlo Iuorio scoring on the power play at 11:25. With Vaughan still a man short due to the major penalty, the Vipers’ Martin Lee was called for hooking at 14:15 and the Waxers soon capitalized on the five on three with a goal by Claudio Cowdrey assisted by Michael Scheu and Giancarlo Iuorio at 14:55. The period ended with the Waxers having staked themselves to a 4-0 lead.

No game against second-seeded Vaughan is going to be a cakewalk and the Vipers came out firing on all cylinders in the second period, Michael Lombardi scoring a short-handed goal at the 19 second mark and Paul Rodrigues pulling Vaughan within two with another goal at 2:01. But the Waxers pulled it together and responded with two goals of their own late in the period. David Kostuch scored his second goal of the game, assisted by, who else, Michael Scheu, at 15:01. Scheu potted his own second goal of the game at 19:01 with an assist from Giancarlo Iuorio. The period ended with the Waxers ahead 6-2.

In the third period, Markham did a great job of protecting the lead, shutting down any chance of a Vaughan comeback. They added to their lead when David Kostuch completed his hat trick, netting a power play goal at 9:42, assisted by Corey Tamblyn and Cody Hamilton. The final dagger, making the score 8-2, came from Corey Tamblyn at 14:12, the assist on the goal going to Kevin Hudes.

Waxer goalie Kyle Rank played a solid game, stopping 38 of 40 shots and giving his team a chance to win.

Waxers polish off Dixie Beehives with 6-2 victory

and sweep series, advance to second round

Cody Hamilton

(Feb. 18.08)  The Markham Waxers dealt a decisive defeat to the visiting Dixie Beehives tonight at Markham Centennial Arena, notching a 6-2 victory to sweep their best-of-five series and advance to round two of the OPJHL South Division playoffs. Cody Hamilton scored twice and assisted on another to lead the Markham attack.

Goalie Kyle Rank was steady in the net for the Waxers, turning aside 31 of 33 shots.

The Waxers jumped into the lead at the two minute mark of the first period on a goal by Fiore Lucente, assisted by Jordan Mustard and Corey Tamblyn. Dixie’s Michael Colavecchia tied the score at 6:59 but Taylor Murphy put Markham back on top at 8:57, with assists from Matthew Meszaros and Paul McMullen, a lead that the Waxers never gave up.

In the second period, Corey Tamblyn made it a two-goal spread, scoring at 3:27 from David Kostuch and at 9:18 Cody Hamilton extended the Waxers lead to 4-1, scoring a short-handed goal.

Dixie looked to have put themselves back in the game early in the third period when Brent Ruppert scored a power play goal at the 56 second mark. The Waxers, however, were having none of it. Cody Hamilton scored his second goal of the game on the power play at 3:04, with helpers from David Kostuch and Michael Scheu, and then Kostuch made Dixie pay for taking a roughing penalty by scoring another power play goal at 6:29, with assists from Cody Hamilton and Corey Tamblyn.

The Waxers now move on to the second round of the playoffs against the Vaughan Vipers. The series begins on Saturday, February 23 at 8 p.m. at Al Palladini Community Centre, 9201 Islington Ave.  Game 2 will be on Monday, February 25 at the Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena at 7:30 p.m.  Game 3 returns to the Al Palladini Community Centre on Wednesday, February 27, starting at 7:15 p.m.  Game 4 is back at Markham Centennial Community Centre Arena on Friday, February 29 at 7:30 p.m.
