Markham Waxers' season ends in Game 7 overtime loss

(March 7, 2010)  The Markham Waxers’ playoff run ended this evening in heartbreaking fashion, a 3-2 sudden death overtime loss to the Wellington Dukes at Wellington in Game 7 of this Central Canadian Hockey League East Division semi-final series. The Waxers had held a three-games-to-none lead but couldn’t put the stubborn Dukes away. Wellington won the next four games, completing their unlikely come from behind series win tonight in front of their home fans.

The first period started out promisingly for the Waxers. Only twenty-four seconds into the game, Anthony Bergin scored, from David Titanic and Doug Reid. The same three teamed up again at 8:50, Anthony Bergin again sealing the deal, and the Waxers were up 2-0. Sean Rudy of Wellington, however, got the Dukes back into it at 10:30, scoring on the power play from Adam Zamec and Jeremy Franklin.

Wellington’s Joe Zarbo pulled his team even at 5:39 of the second period, with an assist from Curtis Leonard.

And that is the way things remained through a nail-biting third period. Game 7, do or die, was headed into overtime.

Wellington came on strong in the sudden death extra frame and, once again, it was the Dukes’ Joe Zarbo who came through with a clutch goal, the game winner at 3:55, from Patrick McEachen. Congratulations to the Dukes on their series victory.

And congratulations to the Markham Waxers, and to coach Joe Cornacchia and his staff, on a great season.

Markham Waxers lose a squeaker to Wellington who avoid being swept

(March 1, 2010)  The Markham Waxers missed a chance tonight to complete a series sweep at home against the Wellington Dukes, falling 3-2 to their Central Canadian Hockey League East Division rivals, to the disappointment of an enthusiastic crowd at Markham Centennial Community Centre.  The Waxers still hold a three-games-to-one lead in this semi-final series.

Wellington, fighting off elimination, were first on the score sheet.  Scott Simmonds scored at 12:44 of the first period, assisted by Brandon Mcintosh.  The Waxers answered soon after, Anthony Bergin scoring on the power play at 14:41 from David Titanic, and at 18:49 Taylor Murphy, with assists from Zack LaRue and Doug Reid, put the Waxers in the lead 2-1 going into the break.

After a scoreless second period, Wellington rallied in the third.  Joe Zarbo scored at 3:59 from Cam Yuill.  At 13:39, with Markham’s Jordan Mustard in the penalty box for tripping, the Dukes’ David Pratt put his team in the lead, an assist going to Sean Rudy.  With a minute and eight seconds to go, Waxers’ Coach Joe Cornacchia pulled goalie Franky Pallazese in favour of a sixth attacker but Wellington was able to hang on for the victory.

For Game 5, the series returns to Wellington on Friday, March 5.

Another overtime win puts Markham Waxers on verge of semi-final sweep

(Feb. 28, 2010) The Markham Waxers defeated the Wellington Dukes 4-3 tonight in another overtime thriller. With the win, Markham takes a three-games-to-none lead in their Central Canadian Hockey League East Division semi-final series. The visiting Waxers had to rally to tie this one and send it into sudden death overtime and, for his second time in these 2010 playoffs, Cody Freeman netted the winning extra-time goal.

The first period ended with Wellington up 1-0 on a goal at 8:59 by Sean Rudy, assisted by Jeremy Franklin.

The Dukes increased their margin in the first minute of the second period, with Mitch Rosborough scoring from Zack Jones and Patrick McEachen. Markham’s Jordan Mustard got his team into the game singlehandedly at 4:17 with an unassisted goal. David Titanic completed the comeback at 18:34, Anthony Bergin and Doug Reid assisting on the play.

Only 1:19 into the third period, however, Wellington’s Joe Zarbo put his team back up by a goal, Zach Blake and Jeff Stanton earning helpers on the goal. It looked like the goal might stand up but the Waxers’ Doug Reid scored on the power play, from Jordan Mustard, at 15:25 and we were headed for overtime.

The suspense didn’t last long. Cody Freeman’s game winner came at 2:45, with assists to Matthew Meszaros and Jamie Kendra.

Game 4 will be played on Monday, March 1 at Markham Centennial Community Arena, starting at 7:30 p.m. The Waxers can complete the series victory at home. So, come on out and support our team!

Dramatic 1-0 overtime win over Wellington gives Markham early series lead

(Feb. 25, 2010)  The Markham Waxers opened their Central Canadian Hockey League East Division semi-final series tonight in Wellington against the Dukes. A scoreless game went into sudden death overtime and this time it was the Waxers’ Taylor Murphy who provided the heroics with a power play goal early in the first extra period, giving the Waxers 1-0 victory and a one game lead in the series.

The night’s other hero was clearly Markham goalie Franky Pallazese who stopped all 43 shots he faced to record the shutout. This was a goaltenders’ duel with full credit also going to Wellington goalie Jordan Ruby who faced 40 shots from the Waxers.

The one shot that found the back of the net came at 4:00 of the first overtime, with Markham on the power play. Zack LaRue and Sean Leaist assisted on the Taylor Murphy goal.

Markham defeats Lindsay in overtime thriller to take quarter-final series

(Feb. 19, 2010) The Markham Waxers won a wild affair in Lindsay tonight against the Muskies, with Cody Freeman scoring in the second overtime period to make the Waxers triumphant 7-6 and bring them victory, by four games to two, in this Central Canadian Hockey League East Division quarter-final series.

The Waxers now go on to the next round, a best four-of-seven
semi-final series against the Wellington Dukes.

Eight goals were scored in the first period. The frame started off promisingly for the Waxers who took a 2-0 lead before the period was three minutes old. Peter Rodrigues, with assists from Fiore Lucente and Rory Craddock scored at 1:43, followed at 2:55 by Jamie Kendra, from Tye Campbell and Jordan Mustard.

But Lindsay shocked the Waxers, and delighted the five hundred home fans at Lindsay Recreation Centre Arena with five goals in a space of only four minutes. Brandon Couto, Riley Austin, Cam Granger, Dean Klomp and Kevin George were the marksmen, with Austin’s tying goal a shorthanded dagger. All of a sudden, the Muskies, determined to fight off elimination, had a 5-2 lead. Massimo Lamacchia restored a bit of order for Markham, scoring on the power play at 12:04 from Jeff Leaist and Zack Larue.

Early in the second period, the Waxers continued their climb back. Jeff Leaist scored on the power play at 1:19 from Anthony Bergin and Doug Reid. Jordan Mustard evened things up at 3:53 from Tye Campbell and Jamie Kendra. The see-saw swung back to Lindsay, however, at 9:12 when Cam Granger scored his second of the night.

Peter Rodrigues drew Markham even again, 6-6, at 7:26 of the third period when he scored his second goal of the game from Fiore Lucente and Massimo Lamacchia.

The two teams exchanged chances in the first overtime period and it was only at 13:32 of the second sudden death frame that Markham’s Cody Freeman, with a helper from Jamie Kendra, sent the Waxers into ecstasy and ended the season of the Lindsay Muskies.
