Markham Overpowers Durham 9-2, Leads Series 2-0

(Feb. 12.07)     Markham took a 2-0 lead in their best of seven playoffs series against Durham, overpowering the Fury 9-2 at Oshawa GM Place on Sunday night.

Sixth place Durham knew their only chance was to shut down the Waxers big goal producers, especially the high scoring line of Daniel Torres, Mike Scheu and David Kostuch. The method they chose was physical intimidation, and at times, outright instigation.

With animosity no doubt also remaining from the Waxers close 5-4 victory on Friday, and with the Waxers scoring early and often in Durham’s building last night, tempers boiled over on several occasions during this second encounter, resulting in fighting majors--and automatic game misconducts.

Waxers coach Rick Cornacchia praised how his team responded to what he described as “goon tactics” by Durham.

The Waxers took an early 2-0 lead on a power play goal by Daniel Torres, from Cody Hamilton and David Kostuch, and another, at even strength, by Mark Cornacchia, set up by Giancarlo Iuorio and, once again, Cody Hamilton.

At 9:08 of the first period the procession to the dressing rooms began, referee Rob McGregor sending four players off for the rest of the game, Durham’s David Johnson and Mitch Moffatt, and Waxers captain Daniel Torres and forward Claudio Cowdrey.

When all the penalties were tabulated from this altercation, the Waxers were on the power play and took quick advantage, marksman Mike Scheu finding the net at 9:33 from Cody Hamilton and Friday’s late game hero Corey Tamblyn.

Giancarlo Iuorio then put the Waxers up 4-0 at 11:14, an assist going to Jason Beattie. Durham’s Rob Kay finally got his team on the board with a power play marker at 14:55 with help from Trevor McKinney and Chris Tanev.

Tempers flared again only 1:28 into the second period, when Durham’s Ryan Ellis tangled with Waxers Mike Scheu, and both their evenings were done. Ellis was assessed an extra penalty as the instigator.

In Friday’s tilt, the Waxers had taken a 3-0 lead before allowing Durham back into the game with some mental lapses. Last night, they were on a mission, determined not to let it happen again and continued to pour it on, scoring three unanswered goals in the middle frame.

Corey Tamblyn capitalized on the power play at 6:39, with assists from Cameron Gaunce and--his fourth of the game--Cody Hamilton. David Kostuch potted one at 8:24 from Mark Cornacchia and Chris Eyles.

Durham’s mounting frustration no doubt contributed to another round of bad feelings that resulted in Jason Beattie of Markham and the Fury’s Chris Marchant taking early showers.

The Waxers kept coming, Giancarlo Iuorio scoring his second of the night at 17:19, from Ryan Carey and Dean Shanks, and the buzzer sounded on a 7-1 Markham lead.

In the third period, Ryan Carey extended the margin, from Paul McMullen, at 9:33 and at 12:07 Corey Tamblyn made it 9-1, assists going to Dean Shanks and Kyle Speers.

The book finally closed on the scoring at 16:14, the Fury’s Michael Markovic getting one by Waxer goalie Matt Hansell on the power play, from Chris Tanev and Zachary McDonald.

The penalty parade, however, continued. Both benches were further depleted at 16:41 when the Waxers’ Paul McMullen and Brett Eagleson of Durham jousted and were sent off.

Coach Cornacchia praised his team for responding to the roughhouse tactics the best way they could, “by scoring goals and backing each other up”.

“Durham did a great job of waking us up and the players responded with an excellent team effort,” he said.

Hopefully tempers will cool by Tuesday, February 13 when these same two teams face each other for Game Three, at Whitby.
