Main Street Markham

Main Street Markham is one of the most fascinating communities of the Town of Markham. Here you can explore the past and, at the same time, enjoy the many flourishing shops, restaurants and pubs that line the historic main street.

Situated on Markham Road (Highway 48) north of Highway 7, Main Street Markham continues in the footsteps of the original Markham village which was founded two centuries ago.

As people settled in the newly surveyed Township of Markham, villages began to develop. In 1805, the north-east corner of Highway 48 and Highway 7 was sold to Joseph Reesor, one of a large number of Pennsylvania-Germans who were to make this area their home. Originally called Reesorville, the ‘corner’ was renamed the village of Markham and grew in size and status to eventually become a unique and vibrant community within the modern Town of Markham. Main Street was the hub of activity for the village, a bustling street with a blend of businesses and services.

Today’s Markham Village retains its small-town charm with many of its original buildings and homes still gracing the street. On Main Street Markham there is something for everyone to enjoy, such as shopping at a wide range of unique shops and boutiques for gifts, crafts, glassware and household items, books, flowers, fashionable clothing and much more. A variety of cuisines are to be savoured in the many restaurants, grills, pubs, and bakeries. A host of commercial and professional services are to be found as well, from hair salons to lawyers, doctors and dentists.

Adding to the eye-pleasing aspect of Main Street Markham, from early summer to late fall, the light standards are enhanced with hanging baskets overflowing in beautiful blossoming plants, and wooden half-barrels planted in colourful flowers and trees adorn the street. Main Street Markham contributed to the Town of Markham’s winning of the provincial Communities in Bloom contest in 1996 and again in 2005. The Town of Markham went on to win the international competition in 1998. Communities in Bloom is a friendly competition that recognizes community participation in landscape beautification, heritage and cultural preservation and environmental awareness.

In recent times, the Markham Village Business Improvement Area adopted the Canada Goose as the mascot for Main Street Markham. It was a fitting choice and has become a widely recognized symbol of Main Street Markham, its business community and its neighbourhood. Main Street Markham is on a migratory path and local residents often witness how Canada Geese work as a team. While flying in formation the lead goose changes regularly, to share the burden. It is because of these values of loyalty, steadfastness, hard work, and teamwork that the business people of Main Street Markham have adopted the noble Canada Goose as their mascot.

For a complete listing of businesses located on Main Street Markham, please see the Business Directory below.

The Markham Village Farmers’ Market

Located in the heart of downtown Markham Village at Robinson Street and Main Street North, the Farmers’ Market captures the good old traditions of the past. The "turn of the century" look of the market is enhanced by a charming venue, complete with old-fashioned signs and canopies. Markham Village Farmers' Market is held on Saturday mornings from early Spring to mid-Autumn. This year’s Market opens on May 9th, and will be held every Saturday until October 10th from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Specializing in farm fresh products, and featuring many organically grown fruits and vegetables, the Market also offers honey, dairy products, baked goods and preserves as well as crafts, flowers, art and books. In addition, garden products are sold such as bedding plants, trees and baskets.

Regular events at the Farmers Market include entertainment, sales of videos, CDs and books, demonstrations of gardening, cooking and crafts, and antique dealers' stalls.

The Markham Village Farmers' Market, a member of Farmers’ Markets of Ontario’s Greenbelt, won the annual Foodland Ontario and Farmers' Markets Ontario award at the 2004 Ontario Fruit & Vegetable Convention.

The Farmers’ Market will also be open every Thursday evening from June 17 - September 23, 2010 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
at the Joseph Street Parkette.

On four Saturdays this season, you will have the chance to meet a Master Chef from four different Main Street Markham restaurants. They will each be presenting a cooking class on how to prepare one of their specialty dishes using farm fresh products from the Main Street Markham Farmers’ Market.

The enjoyment of the Farmers’ Market extends beyond choosing from the many great products. There is also weekly entertainment, with a different act every Saturday all through the Market season. Musical genres range from folk to jazz.

There is plenty of free parking behind many of the retail shops.

Main Street Markham Pedestrian Day

Visitors and shoppers will have the street all to themselves on Main Street Markham Pedestrians Day. In 2010, these will be held on Sunday, May
30, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. This is a great time to shop, dine and stroll through the original historic downtown Markham as it was before the days of the automobile!

This year’s May 30 Pedestrian Day will feature the Annual Main Street Markham Mile in support of the Alzheimer Society of York Region.

Another new feature of Pedestrian Days is Artists Alley, located in the heritage area of Main Street Markham. Here you can watch local artists at work, handcrafting unique pieces, and can purchase art right from the master. Village Pottery and Art Studio offers free pottery demonstrations and a free pottery lesson. You can make your own gift for a special someone.

Pedestrian Day has something for everybody. Free martial arts lessons are given by Nox Martial Arts. And, you can be entertained on Buskers’ Alley at the Church Street Parkette and, at the same time, support our local upcoming talent.

Free live entertainment can also be enjoyed right on Main Street, at Mains Mansion, Carlaw Music, The Artisan Pub and The Duchess of Markham. DeeJay Al Fisher has hits from every decade, from the 50’s to the present.

Markham Village Music Festival

The Markham Village Music Festival, taking place this year Friday evening, June 18 and all day Saturday, June 19, has something to please every ear, from rock and roll to classical, from country to hip hop, featuring both professional and amateur entertainers from Markham, York Region and the GTA. In addition to the great bands and soloists, you’ll see dancers, jugglers, clowns and much more!

The Festival starts Friday night at 6 p.m. with a cultural celebration. Come for dinner and sample cuisine from around the world and then be entertained by the many and diverse cultural communities that make up the Town of Markham. Then finish the evening off with a selection of great bands.

All through the music festival period, you can rest for a while at one of the pubs or restaurants on Main Street, shop at the international craft booths or visit the retail businesses that have Festival Specials for the weekend. You'll find great crafts and art, from paintings and sculptures, to flower pots and jewellery, produced by artists and artisans from York Region and from around the world.

Coinciding with the beginning of the Markham Village Music Festival, a fine arts exhibition opens at 74 Main Street on Thursday, June 17 and continues until Sunday, June 27. So, drop in to the gallery where you will see provocative art from established and emerging artists. Innovative, perhaps controversial, and visually stunning, it’s a chance to enjoy the art and to cast your vote in the People’s Choice Award.

For another highlight of the Markham Village Music Festival, take the kids over to Morgan Park for the carnival rides and games. Friday and Saturday evenings wrap up at 10:00 p
.m.
