skillfully narrates both happiness and
tragedy in a concert surely not to be missed. The primal
nature of love is explored through the lush and
evocative Prelude and Liebestod (Love-Death) by Richard
Wagner. A cornerstone in the repertoire, cellist Rachel
Mercer performs Schumann’s posthumously popular Cello
Concerto in A minor that was written in a brief
optimistic state during the composer’s tempestuous life.
Symphony No. 10 by Shostakovich, controversially
theorized as an allegory of the life and times of
Stalin, is a mighty musical portrait of bitter lyricism
and dynamic frenzy.
