Family Law: Separation and Divorce, Child and Spousal Support, Property Division

(joint project between Markham Public Library and Chinese Family Services of Ontario)

When a marriage or relationship comes to an end, many people are not aware of their legal rights.
This information session aims to provide general information about Ontario Family Law.

• PRESENTED IN ENGLISH AND MANDARIN

Target Customers: Everyone is welcome

Registration: Free. All are welcome. Register by calling 416.979.8299 x 221. For new immigrants, please bring valid PR card or landing document for registration.

Presented by a representative from Metro Toronto Chinese & Southeast Asian Legal Clinic. Library staff member from 6:45 – 7:00 p.m. (approximately 15 minutes – see below)

Workshop will include a brief library orientation by a library staff member, scheduled in advance by the Branch Librarian (see below)

Topics include:
 • Differences between Common-Law and Married
 • Legal procedures of separation and divorce
 • Separation agreement
 • Differences between sole custody, joint and shared custody
 • Access rights
 • Calculation of child support and spousal support
 • Differences of property division between common-law and married couples
 • To discover library services and resources and ways to obtain support from the public library

Staff Involvement:
 • Familiarize themselves with the program – Talking Points
 • Print out and display posters and share with customers
 • Provide number of attendees/feedback about library presentation component
 • Assistance with set up

March 7th:
6:45 to 7:00 p.m. - will comprise an orientation by a member of library staff (overview, library resources, how to obtain a library card, programming, collections etc.) Translation may be needed. (a staff member will be scheduled in advance for this by the Branch Librarian)
