Markham Encourages Support of Markham Food Bank Drive

Canada Day Celebration Marks Beginning of Food Drive Effort to Support Approximately 1,000 Residents.

In order to help our 1,000 plus neighbours in need, Markham is encouraging residents to support the Markham Food Bank (MFB). To kick start this latest food drive, you are invited to bring one non-perishable food item to Markham’s Canada Day Celebrations.

Please drop off your food item at the Markville Mall shuttle location for the Milne Park Canada Day celebrations, or the entrance to Milne Park between 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. on July 1. Milne Park is located on the east side of McCowan Road, south of Highway 7.

Currently, in York Region, 10 per cent of the population experience some degree of food insecurity, worrying about having enough food to eat, running short on food, and parents going hungry so their children have enough to eat. While low income seniors, two-parent and single-parent families, and others using food banks continues to grow, food drive collection continues to decline – down 6 per cent since 2002.The Markham Food Bank is experiencing a shortage of food supplies to meet the current demand. Markham residents are encouraged to support this food drive by donating the following most needed items:

  • Canned vegetables
  • Hot and cold cereals
  • Hearty soups (canned / dry)
  • Tea and coffee
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned fish (tuna, salmon)
  • Canned meats
  • Snacks (granola bars, fruit rollups, cheese / crackers, raisins / craisins, rice crispie squares)

  • Juice (canned / boxes / crystals)
  • Milk (powered, canned)
  • Canned pasta
  • Peanut butter (500g size)
  • Rice (small bags)
  • Crackers
  • Macaroni and cheese

To help meet the needs of Markham residents year round, you can also donate non-perishable food items at the Markham Food Bank or your local fire station.
