Location: Varley Art Gallery of Markham, 216 Main Street Unionville, Markham  map

Born in Kenya of Indian heritage, Brendan Fernandes investigates the concepts of cultural identity and authenticity in the context of globalization. For his solo exhibition in Markham, the artist will feature a new body of work that explores identity through dance and choreography. Using the physicality, movement and stillness of the medium, he challenges its traditions through the lens of his multifaceted practice.

In Position unites Brendan Fernandes’ research into classical dance with questions of ethnicity and migration within the charged framework of La Bayadère, an Orientalist ballet choreographed by Marius Petipa in 1877. Through sculpture, photography, installation and performance, Fernandes explores the roots of the arabesque, both as a dance position and as an element of decorative Islamic design. Jenna Savella, a soloist with the National Ballet of Canada, will activate the installation during the opening reception. She will perform a piece choreographed by Fernandes that responds to The Kingdom of the Shades, a famous scene from La Bayadère, as well as the title of a work featured in the exhibition.

This exhibition is produced in partnership with the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery (Kitchener-Waterloo, ON), Rodman Hall, Brock University (St. Catharine’s, ON), Southern Alberta Art Gallery (Lethbridge, AB), St. Mary's University Art Gallery (Halifax, NS) and Contemporary Art Gallery (Vancouver, BC.) A catalogue is in production with Black Dog Publishing.

Brendan Fernandes completed the Independent Study Program of the Whitney Museum of American Art (2007) and earned his Masters of Fine Arts (2005) from The University of Western Ontario, and his Bachelor of Fine Arts (2002) from York University in Canada. He has exhibited widely, including exhibitions at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Art and Design NY, Art in General, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, The National Gallery of Canada, The Art Gallery of Hamilton, The Studio Museum in Harlem, Mass MoCA, The Andy Warhol Museum, ZKM, the Art Gallery of York University, Deutsche Guggenheim, The Bergen Kunsthall , Manif d’Art: The Quebec City Biennial, The Third Guangzhou Triennial and the Western New York Biennial through The Albright-Knox Art Gallery.
