Avoiding Money Scams in Canada

(joint program between Markham Public Library, Credit Counselling Society,
CCSYR and IRCC through Library Settlement Partnerships (LSP))

Each November Canadians celebrate Financial Literacy Month.

In this workshop, newcomers to Canada will learn ways to avoid scams and fraud, especially those targeting seniors, how to report a fraud, as well as how to be a smart and thoughtful consumer.

Target Audience: Newcomers to Canada, senior friendly

Language: English, with Mandarin interpretation

Program Highlights/Objectives:

· Participants will have an opportunity to receive financial literacy education, which will help them to improve their money management skills, and learn how to avoid money scams in Canada, especially those targeting seniors

· Participants will learn about various topics relating to the Canadian banking system, including potential financial frauds and scams

· Participants will acquire skills to identify and prevent various forms of fraud, and how to report frauds and scams to the police, Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, and credit reporting agencies (Equifax and Transunion)

· Participants will learn ways to obtain support from the public library, and discover library services and resources
